Brazil, Met Gala content and what I want to with my career

Another TDT (thought dump Thursday), except I’m not posting it on a Thursday! This is the second one I’ve posted on a Friday, so maybe I should make a new acronym?

I was going to include more thorough movie reviews for Anora and Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy but I watched them a couple weeks ago and forgot to write down my full thoughts. Anora was entertaining, interesting, semi-weird pacing but definitely kept me engaged. I don’t understand how people are interpreting Ani and Igor’s relationship as romantic, like that to me is actually insane. I partially understand the fandom behind Anora, but not a movie I feel the need to watch again, and not a best picture winner IMO. Bridget Jones was cutesy, classic rom-com formula. I have no desire to go back and watch the first three movies, but I was entertained for the 2-hour, 10-minute runtime.

In this post you can enjoy my thoughts on:

  • Vogue Met Gala content

  • Leftover articles from my report

  • Career aspirations verbalized

  • Brazil vlogs that made me happy

Reminder for articles that have a paywall, you can plug them into archive.ph and you’re able to read them for free!

A) Vogue Met Gala content

Vogue articles I read to learn more about the Met Gala theme and the co-host of the event! Very excited for this theme, especially the timing of a Black culture focused theme during Tr*mp’s anti-DEI era. I’m very intrigued to see how white celebrities interpret this theme.

Pharell & his position as co-chair of the Met: A short read about Pharell and his upcoming position as co-chair of the Met Gala. Very pro-Black and empowering.

How Jeremy O. Harris came to know dandyism in his own life: I like this quote from Jeremy O. Harris’s article for Vogue discussing how he came to embrace Black dandyism in his own life. “So, to me, to be a Black dandy is to dress as though you know you’re loved and therefore have no use for shame. Shame is the enemy of all exuberance. Shame comes from fear, and fear is the enemy of style.”

Colman Domingo’s May Met cover: Colman Domingo just seems like the warmest, most engaging person on Earth. The styling and photography for this editorial is absolutely everything- the intentional over-editing and smoothing makes it seem like the images are painted portraits instead of photos.

Law Roach styling various Black celebrities and cultural figures: Holy shit, Law did his number one big one with the styling of this shoot. Everyone looks absolutely impeccable, and it’s only amplified my anticipation of the Met. I can’t pick a favorite look because everyone looks fantastic. I love Black people and Black culture and being Black- truly, there is nothing that makes me happier!!! Also, new crush on Tyshawn Jones (second row, man in the pink suit): unlocked! Thank you, Vogue.

B) Leftover articles from my report

Tr*mp’s refusal to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home: How the Tr*mp administration’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s order to bring back Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador’s infamous Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) is a sign that the Constitutional Crisis is upon us.

Niche, trendy items recently launched at the grocery store: Substack article on new trendy sort of items that have recently launched at grocery stores. I need to get more tapped into the food marketing because I think it’s such an interesting niche, and I always find myself wondering about different food trends that are being pushed.

C) Career aspirations verbalized

The New Garde: Everything is Marketing w/ Ana Andjelic: If anyone is wondering what I mean when I say I want to be a brand strategist, listen to this podcast episode. I’ve listened to Ana’s episode on The Cutting Room Floor, and this was another great exploration into her career as a brand strategist. She talks about her career path, what she sees as a sign of good branding, how important branding is versus the product itself and her opinions on the rise of Gen-Z creators labeling themselves brand strategists and giving advice from the viewpoint on social media.

D) Brazil vlogs that made me happy

Two of these vlogs are in Rio, and the third is in São Paulo (which I think is my favorite of the three). Includes some touristy bits, as expected, but entertaining and she definitely has some good recommendations. These videos have also made me dive into the ethics behind tourism in Rio, and Brazil in general. If I find any good articles, I’ll include them in my report or some other post!
