Weekly REPORT 6/3
Happy Pride Month! Minority communities deserve extra love always but especially as we traverse the next four years of this presidential administration.
Some things I’m loving lately are Austin Butler edits from Cannes and date recipes (I don’t think I’ve ever tried a date so who knows if these will be put to use, but ice cream & olive oil & pan-fried dates sound good right?) Something I’ve been seeing a lot of randomly is parasite cleanses.
My goal for this week is to get my sleep schedule under control and find new recipes to cook! I think 1 new recipe per week is a very doable idea. Nigeria recap & vlog coming soon, I promise. Another book review and WIWTS (what I’m wearing this summer) also on the horizon! xoxo
READING
Lorde’s RollingStone interview: Learning that she was in a long-term relationship with a man 17 years older than her who met her as a teenager and worked at her record label puts so many things into perspective. In-depth dive into her personal struggles towards the end of the Solar Power tour (breakup, eating disorder, lack of creative drive) and how she overcame crippling stage fright with MDMA. Her actively searching, and watching in full, the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape I find so concerning. Her comments on the tape are even more disturbing, given the truth of the nature of the relationship told by Pamela herself.
David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult for Wonderland: Only a snippet of the full interview is showcased in this article, but from the excerpt given, there’s definitely a great energy between David and Nicholas. I loved David in Hollywood and The Politician, so to see him in a huge role like this is so exciting. Nicholas also just seems like the perfect Lex Luthor. The styling for this shoot is great, specifically the all-brown look for David (I’m always partial to an all-brown ensemble) and the liberty tee with distressed jean for Nicholas.
Jack O’Connell for The Face: Weeks later and I’m still thinking about Sinners! Great interview with Jack O’Connell and fun to learn more about his process as an actor and working with Ryan Coogler. I haven’t watched any of Jack’s work, but apparently, he’s in the upcoming Godzilla x Kong movie which I definitely won’t be seeing so…we’ll see what other role choices he makes moving forward.
The Black supermodels that stormed Versailles: Super informative article talking about the Battle of Versailles which was a fashion show where American designers competed against French designers, and one of the first moments black models really got to shine. I would’ve loved to see the Battle of Versailles referenced at the MET Ball. Black designer Stephen Burrows paved the way at the time when the “Black is Beautiful” movement started post-Civil Rights. Highlights the first Black supermodels, including Donyale Luna, Beverly Jones, and Naomi Sims.
EATING
Breakfast assortments: Because we stayed at hotels with not fully stocked kitchens for much of the trip (more on that later this week), breakfast during the Nigeria trip left much to be desired. I deeply missed making my own breakfasts that were balanced and filling, so I’ve been enjoying making full assortments.
PLAYING
The New Garde episode “Media Darlings”: Talked a lot about access to celebrities, the changing landscape of digital media and celebrity interviews, the change in priorities of celebrities when on press tours. Also goes on a little tangent about Interview Magazine’s special sauce, who I’m a big fan of, and just a really interesting conversation around celebrity accessibility.
Slow fashion brands: Lovely little video with recommendations for small, sustainable brands!
OBSESSING
Shortbread cookies from Nigeria: The best cookies ever. Perfect for tea, coffee, late night snacking etc. I brought back oh so many packages of them.
RECOMMENDING
Lorde on Song Exploder podcast: Lorde walks through the process of making “Sober”. I love people that get excited about the music they make. She describes creating the music with such imagery. Love hearing the MJ influence on this song and it’s funny to hear her dear one working with Jack Antonoff on this song when they were allegedly together at this point (apparently there’s a PowerPoint going around describing the lore? I’m not fully tapped in). Also, Kiwi accents are nice to listen to.
High Potential on Hulu: As someone who was deeply obsessed with Criminal Minds at a point in time (my love for MGG remains), I love the formulaic aspect of this show with murder at the beginning and then the episode unraveling the mystery while personal development happens in the in-between moments. The main character Morgan has a very high IQ and is so witty and perfectly mom-cringe. The tropes for the other characters are obvious but don’t feel taxing to watch, and you still get to know them a bit as independent characters. It’s only one season and I highly recommend it.
TREATING
Sleep: I've really been trying to prioritize getting at least 7 hours since I’ve been back. Now, when I’m falling asleep to get these 7 hours is indeed a heinous hour because jet lag is kicking my ass. Nevertheless, we persist!
