Weekly REPORT 8/12

Hello dearest readers, I’m happy to be back to weekly reports! I’ve missed them, and hopefully y’all have as well. Yesterday, I shared some of my thoughts on Lollapalooza and turning 23. Today, I’ll share two pieces of advice:

  • Advice nugget 1: If you have over 10 nosebleeds in one month (including a particularly gnarly one in the middle of Central Park resulting in you having to stick a tampon up your nose for 30 minutes while passerbys laugh), and an ENT tells you he’s going to cauterize your nose to help stop the frequent nosebleeds, make sure to ask if you might have any symptoms following the procedure! Take it from my firsthand experience that being unprepared for a Sahara level dry throat, extreme buzzing in your face and teeth and a leaky faucet for a nose before a six hour shift is quite possibly one of the worst positions the doctor can put you in.

  • Advice nugget 2: If you are naive enough to think that, at a music festival in a city you don’t live in with attendance of over 400,000 people over a four day period, you won’t see your least favorite person ever standing 20 people in front of you while waiting to see your favorite artist, you are an absolute idiot! And if this is to happen to you, I implore you to take the opportunity to throw something heavy at this person while you have the proximity, as I deeply regret not having done so. This is a joke!

    Obviously.

    Kinda.

Lengthy report this week as I’ve been stockpiling articles to read and playing catch up on my socials. I will be in Vegas for my 23rd living it up with my sweet Bofa before she leaves for grad school in Scotland, but I’m hoping to stay on schedule and post next week’s report on Monday/Tuesday as per usual. Book review of The Talented Mr. Ripley coming this week. Sending my love and everyone can in turn send prayers that I don’t perish in the 100+ degree Vegas heat. Thanks xx

Oh also! New YouTube video below, it’s a cute little thrift haul. Okay bye!

Summer Thrift Haul

READING

  1. Mark Holgate discussing indie magazines for PAPER: It’s so cool that this man is just a wealth of knowledge for fashion magazines. I’d love to become a magazine collector in the future. Very interesting to hear him talk about how magazines such as The Face and i-D were the center of collecting culture, in that you would learn what clubs, restaurants, hairdressers, boutiques etc. to go to because of the magazine. Discusses the origins of The Face, i-D and PAPER and the original focuses of each magazine. The way Mark can recall certain models, photographers, stylists etc. in specific issues going back for years and years is such a talent, and it’s so cool to see the way people’s interests can turn into these niche and entertaining hobbies.

  2. Logan Lerman for Bustle: I know very little about Logan Lerman and have never read an interview from him, so this was nice to have! The styling for this shoot is great and he seems like an easygoing, romantic sort of guy. I don’t think I’ll be seeing this movie in theaters, but interested to check it out once it’s on streaming. Also, I love that he and Dylan O’Brien are good friends.

  3. Tr*mp administration deporting people to where they have no connection: The fact that the interviewer had to ask the question of what due process is supposed to mean, not what it means to the Tr*mp administration, is so telling to where we are as a country at this stage of the administration. It’s so baffling to think that people can just be snatched off of the streets and sent to countries that they have literally no connection to, with no way to contact their families back in the US. Not to mention in this specific case, the deportees were sent to South Sudan which is currently a warzone. Also, according to this article, many of the people who have been removed to South Sudan already served their prison sentences, but could currently be in a prison in South Sudan. The fact is, no one knows the status of the removed individuals since they have arrived in South Sudan. Gets deep into immigration law, some of which I found a little difficult to get through, but very informative.

  4. Community event hosts are the new leaders: A really interesting article about how the community centered space is changing its shape as run clubs, local multi-vendor markets and wellness-focused social clubs are growing exponentially due to influencer hosts that are creating these events. Highlights a company called Offline, which is dedicated to connecting brands with local, niche communities to host these events. Discusses how brands are getting in on the action (of course), and just poses some points about Gen-Z’s loneliness epidemic and “craving community” to get you thinking. Hosts really have stepped into these roles as solution-based thinkers to bridge the gap between brand and community, but I’ve also read stories about these community events falling apart because of poor planning, oversight on important details, lack of inclusion etc., so it’s not a role that just anyone can step into, despite its easy-access “influencer” appeal.

“We believe that the host is the next influential archetype because they hold the most valuable thing in culture today: social capital.”

  5. Extreme sexual violence in Eritrea*warning: story includes discussion of sexual violence*: Describes the brutal and inhumane sexual violence against Tigrayan women at the hands of Eritrean and Ethipian forces who are enacting a genocide upon the people of Tigray. Although there is a peace treaty between Tigray and Ethipoia, the violence continues and according toThe Guardian, 90% of the Tigrayan women who experienced sexual violence have not received medical or psychological treatment. It’s unfathomably heartbreaking to hear how these soldiers are gang raping these women and then inserting rusted nails, clippers and other foreign bodies into their reproductive parts, as well as notes literally taunting these women about how they want to wipe out the Tigrayan population. And of course, because of the Tr*mps administration, the limited clinics funded by USAID that could have helped to handle the aftermath of this sexual violence are closing down.

EATING

  1. Truth BBQ: In Houston, the two BBQ places people rave about are Truth BBQ and Pinkerton’s. This place is absolutely worth all of the hype it gets. My brother, mom and I got in line around 5:30 last Friday and only had to wait around 20 minutes to get inside and then another 10 minutes to order. I’ve driven past Truth before, and there’s always been lines out the wazoo so a total of 30 minutes for a wait is much better than I’d anticipated. My mom of course was chatting it up with the chef’s behind the glass which got all three of us a piece of brisket to try (it’s the Phillips charm, we can’t help it!) and after ordering, we grabbed our trays and headed to a long family style table. The decor is super clean and elevated, compared to most BBQ establishments, but still warm and inviting. There were little kids running around and very sweet workers walking around asking if you needed anything. Ok, now the food! Brisket is my favorite BBQ delicacy and theirs was bomb. Between my mom, JT and I, we all got different sausages (mom’s was my favorite) and JT got their special pork chop that had to be ordered at the register. The best sides were by far the sweet brussel sprouts and the mac n cheese, but I also loved the potato salad and the tator tot casserole JT got was solid! 10/10 recommend.

  2. White bean, spinach and salami salad: When in doubt, summer salad! If I had a fun pasta shape, I would’ve added that into this mix as well. Also threw in some kale, parsley, red onion and fresh garlic to round out the mix. Alongside some tortilla chips and the best berry smoothie, this was a fantastic lunch.

PLAYING

  1. Don’t Tap the Glass Tyler, the Creator interview with Zane Low for Apple Music: This is probably one of my favorite interviews Tyler has ever done. I’m sometimes wary of Zane Lowe’s interview skills, but this was an interview where I felt they were both equally passionate about the music and Zane was able to ask really intuitive questions as a result. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I LOVE how passionate Tyler is about music. People who are passionate about something make them so attractive. Maybe it’s also the mustache? Y’all know how much I love a mustache (in theory)...

OBSESSING

  1. Attega tops: I’m not exactly sure what country they’re based in, I believe somewhere in Europe, but I saw the off white top on Amalie Star recently, and it looked even cuter on her than it does on the website. Super simple but a fun basic. The second top gives nurse costume vibes but in a cutesy, less costumey way. I think I’m wary though because of how sheer it seems and as someone who is anti-bra, that’s not ideal.

  2. Camo shorts: I need a pair, badly! Eyeing a long, baggy pair from eBay that are old American Eagle but would also love a little booty short camo moment. I saw a cute pair of tiny camo shorts that were Union Bay but I waited too long and missed out.

RECOMMENDING

  1. The Marias Lollapalooza performance: I won’t say I regret picking Dominic Fike instead of The Marias on Sunday at Lolla, but after watching their performance on YouTube, I think it’s fair to say they had a stronger performance. I really hope they put out new music sometime next year and go on another tour because I would definitely prioritize seeing them! Maria’s voice is so angelic and I love the heavier rock twist some of the songs took on in this live performance.

  2. Danessa Myricks yummy skin tint: I bought this product again so I could stop sharing with my mom. I got a shade deeper and wore it the entirety of Lolla weekend. Holy cow was I shocked at how well it lasted!!! I need to get the Danessa Myricks blurring balm because people have said that the combo of those two products locks in your makeup all day and really minimizes oil. However, even in pairing the skin tint with my usual ELF primer, I was so impressed by its lasting ability in the Chicago sun and it really helped me maintain a glow but without looking greasy. Highly recommend this product for anyone with combo/oily skin!

TREATING

  1. Mid rise white jeans from Uptown Cheapskate: Ok, real ones know that I had the most perfect pair of low rise white pants that got absolutely destroyed after a muddy night out at PBR during my sophomore year of college. Since then, I’ve been relentlessly on the hunt for a replacement pair of low rise, white flared pants. This pair of jeans is a little more mid rise than low rise, but the fit is pretty spot on and I love how flared the bottom is! Definitely going to continue looking for a more lightweight, linen style of low rise white pants but I’m beyond excited to wear these in the fall in New York.

  2. Brown knit top from MAM Resale: Yes it was $20 which is more than I’d usually pay at a “thrift” store for this item of clothing, but when it comes to sheer little knit tops like this, I know I’m going to wear them a million times over so it’s always worth it in the end!
