Weekly REPORT 9/9

My biggest takeaway after last week is that I need to be sleeping more. Somehow, I’ve reverted back to my college sleep schedule of like 2-9:30am and it’s the worst thing ever for my body and my sanity. Focusing on fixing that this week! Aside from getting caught in torrential downpour on Saturday, last week was such a ball. I’ve been going to different events and getting free stuff (a favorite pastime of mine), and most importantly, I’ve gotten to see so many friends (and make new ones)! I start back at Anthro today and I’m happy to add a bit more structure back into my weeks. The full-time job hunt continues as the endemic of unpaid internships… I can’t even get into it. Marinating on a quote from Thundercat that Zack Fox mentioned in his interview with Dazed (down below) which states “He basically told me to stop being scared because you can always take the safe route later on; it’s always gonna be there.” Cheers to not taking the safe route!

READING

  1. Zack Fox for Dazed: He is one of the funniest people currently alive and I will read any interview of his because I know I’m going to giggle. Going to include some of my favorite snippets from the interview.

    • “E IS FOR… ENDGAME. WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?

‘I want to have community with creative autonomy. I want to wake up, be near my friends and collaborators, and say, ‘What do we want to make today?’ And have to take as few steps as possible to start that process.’”

I think the answer almost perfectly encapsulates my dream for life. I don’t dream of work, but I want the ability to create whatever feels right, hop on different projects etc. and be able to sustain an enjoyable and fruitful life off of that alone. He’s so naturally funny, I’m going to include some of my favorite snippets of it below. The fact that he said David Cross, evil manager from Alvin and the Chipmunks, is who he’d want to play him in a TV series… I’m so dead.

    • “When I go out, I want to be left alone. I want to stand in a dark room and dance. I don’t want to network. I don’t want to ‘chop it up’… When someone is talking to me in the club like ‘Oh, and imma hit you up over email about this and that’, like nigga what? We should beat you with sticks.”

    • “Being mean, boring and uninteresting is underrated. For most of human history, a lot of people were mean, boring and uninteresting. Now, there’s almost a beauty standard, or a behavioural standard, that everyone has to have a special interest. Everyone should have fun facts about themselves, they should be kind, have two jokes at the top of a conversation, know how to end it well, and be able to dismount. It’s really underrated just to have people who are like ‘No, I’m boring and kind of mean and if you want to fuck with me, you’re gonna have to fight through that.’”

EATING

  1. Petit Chou cinnamon roll: This cinnamon roll is top 8 (out of 20) on Infatuation’s best cinnamon rolls NYC list. It was delicious! I had it after running home in the rain from seeing The Dare and it was just the most blissful moment ever. The dough was perfectly soft! I think the icing was still a little sweet for me, but I also have a low tolerance for sugar when it comes to desserts specifically so take that with a grain of salt. Much better than the Sunday Morning cinnamon roll and I would go back to try their bacon, egg and cheese croissant sandwich that looked divine.

  2. Meatball sandwich on ciabatta from Panineria: I wanted to go to Fonty’s Bodega opening in The West Village on Saturday, but unfortunately the weather had other plans, and I wasn’t prepared with an umbrella! I was still in a sandwich mood after getting rained out from the Fonty’s line, so I stopped by Panineria which TikTok recommended. Meatball sub was delicious and super filling.

PLAYING

  1. Iwana Cristal’s thrift haul: I thought this was a really well done thrift haul! I like how she talks you through her thought process, and she found some of the cutest stuff. Her editing style is simple and the video was entertaining. Definitely will be checking out the rest of her channel.

  2. Sunday Morning DJ set with Mike Clay: This set is so chill and vibey- I’m in love. Mixes between jazz, RnB, rap and other soulful stuff makes for the best background work playlist. There are a few housier type moments but I like the variety here!

OBSESSING

  1. Gimaguas pieces: Every so often, I like to go through my long list of small brands to see what they’re up to, look into any trends, find fashion inspiration etc. I was doing my usual Gimaguas scroll and fell absolutely head over heels with these three pieces. I think these pieces are so me and so fabulous and they’re apparently having a pop-up in Soho this week? Would love to go and try these on.

  2. Niihai cropped peacoat: I really want to thrift a cropped peacoat with a rounded collar like this one from Niihai. Something about it is kind of perfectly boring and English and I feel like I would exclusively wear this on rainy days.

RECOMMENDING

  1. Ben Sterling b2b Prospa: ELECTRIC!!! No other words to describe this set. Them passing out pizza to the crowd was such a cute moment and I loved how much people were dancing; the no phones rule definitely helped create a great atmosphere. Minutes1:03-1:22 are pure gold. Will be looking into both Ben Sterling & Prospa more.

  2. Patty melt from Daily Provisions: I was in the midst of hour 5 event chaos during the NYFW showroom for my PR internship when I realized I desperately needed to eat. I went to Daily Provisions because I knew they had sandwiches, quick and easy lunch, and decided on the patty melt. Best decision OF MY LIFE. This is one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten ever. The ground beef was seasoned so well, the carmelized onions with the secret sauce? I would cater this sandwich for an event. Will be going back for this ASAP.

  3. DICE: I went to a Hyptrak Magazine launch event last week for free courtesy of DICE! It’s a live events app where a lot of clubs, bars, event spaces etc. will have tickets for their events. There are more standard events like DJ set tickets or concert tickets, but my favorite thing to do is scroll through the events and see what cool events are possibly free. I stumbled upon the HypeTrak event, signed up and had a lovely time! The event was co-sponored by Corona (can you say open bar with mango margaritas or beers?!), there were live music acts, and I got a tote bag of merch including a sick t-shirt, bottle opener keychain, mini cassette tape and a copy of the magazine. Highly recommend checking out DICE.

TREATING

  1. Happy hour at Verlaine: I think Verlaine has been on my happy hour NYC list since 2023 when I was here in the summer, so I’m happy I finally got to cross it off. I went with Isabela and we enjoyed $8 lychee martinis and some yummy fries. The martinis were so delish and it was my first time trying lychee- I’m a fan. I think this spot would be a little chaotic for a first date, but great for a pregame or catch up with a friend. I recommend getting there early (6:30-7) if you want a seat because otherwise, it becomes standing room only.
