Can’t hang, I’m sew busy

I looked up sewing puns for the title… Sorry or you’re welcome, whatever applies.

I’ve been sewing since the fifth grade, but only in the past year or so have I started to make things that I really love. I’ve always been used to making my own patterns, and it’s been fun to test the limit of my sewing knowledge (and turn to YouTube when I need guidance).

What I’ve made recently

  1. Yellow cowl neck short sleeve wrap top: I’m obsessed with this butter yellow color and it’s super soft. This was my first time sewing sleeves, and it wasn’t too bad except I had to gather the fabric a little at the shoulder. The cowl neck front and the back are both a little too big, hence why I had to add a tie in the back so that the top stayed on. I’ve adjusted the pattern since, and I want to remake this top in the same color so that it’s a bit better fitting, but I like the concept. 3/5

  2. Tiered plaid ruffle skirt: I had a reference photo saved my camera roll for a bit, so when I found this gorgeous red and blue plaid fabric, I knew just what I wanted to make! Since I’ve already made a tiered skirt before, it was pretty easy to adjust my first pattern. I think I made the first panel a little too skinny, because when I wear the skirt too low rise it kind of cuts my ass in half, but I like the way this turned out. 4/5

  3. Green set with modal fabric: This is my first time sewing with modal fabric and it most definitely will not be my last. It’s so thick and stretchy, and the fabric doesn’t move under the machine like the more athletic, stretchy fabrics tend to do (case and point, the yellow top). I made this high neck cap sleeve top that I’m obsessed with. If I find more fabrics that are similar to modal, I’ll definitely be making another. The skirt is a simple mini skirt with a rolled waistband, and I’m so in love with it! 5/5

What I want to make soon

  1. White midi skirt with wrap tie: A girl on YouTube just posted a video on how she made a version of this skirt (God bless my YouTube algorithm, seriously) so I don’t think it should be too difficult. I want it to be in a patterned white linen or maybe even an eyelet fabric, but that might be annoying to sew. I want this to be done in time for summer, so there’s no rush to make it.

  2. Offkut black skirt: I love the style of this skirt, but I hate the fabric that it’s made in, so I want to make my own version with a thicker, stretchy fabric. I’m also excited to make the toolbelt style accessory that they have it with.

  3. Perfect black mini skirt (not pictured below): I’m putting an end to my dilemma of finding the perfect black mini skirt by making my own! This would ideally be in the same fabric as the Offkut skirt, something that’s thicker and has stretch.

  4. Gray wool light jacket with fun buttons: This video from TikTok is the inspiration, and after making a couple tops recently, I have the confidence to sew sleeves! Constructing the garment would be pretty easy, but it’s the buttonholes that would be an absolute pain in the ass.

  5. Suede bag: I attempted to make a suede midi skirt a month or so ago, and I hated the way it turned out. Sewing with suede is so painful on my tiny little Ikea sewing machine, because the fabric moves so much under the needle. However, I’ve been on the hunt for a suede bag for a while and bags are relatively easy to make. If I end up making this, I’ll just need to pray for the best.
