Weekly REPORT 1/20

Happy MLK Day! Not going to mention the treacherous events that coincidentally happened today but know I’m just as terrified and angry as most (sane) people are.

Chicago was cold as hell, but a very playful little weekend! The networking event I went to definitely boosted my confidence in my professional skills and reinforced that advertising/marketing is looking for talent like me. Now, I have to just let things play out and continue to put myself out there; I’m feeling optimistic. I also got to hang out with Micky and Ben, see some other familiar WashU faces, eat good food and go drunk dancing at a gay bar- one of my favorite pastimes.

It’s men’s fashion week; Houston is supposed to freeze tomorrow (I’m still supposed to go in to work at Anthro? We’ll see…) and TikTok doesn’t feel the same post-14-hour ban. Stay warm and stay informed peeps.

READING

  1. Call out climate criminals by Current Affairs: Reading this made me so deeply livid. Climate deniers make me want to peel my skin off, holy shit. It also reminded me that Kamala ran on a pro-fossil fuel agenda. Definitely a persuasive read to continue calling out climate criminals and deniers, as well as uplift climate activists as the fight gets exponentially harder with our new administration.

  2. Theories on the nature of romantic love by Psyche: Not sure why I decided to read this extremely lengthy article on romantic love when I’ve never experienced it, but here I am. An interesting read that goes into the psychology behind romantic love, what’s unexplained and how past philosophers have tackled different puzzling aspects of the nature of romantic love. I was reminded of random bits of knowledge I collected from my “Sex And Gender in Greek and Roman Antiquity” class and my “Darwin and Doctors" class. Lots of cool and thought-provoking theories, and unintentionally funny at points.

“Some researchers have drawn parallels between the brain chemistry characteristic of romantic love and that of obsessive-compulsive disorder”

“Interestingly, this view challenges the puzzle of eternal love, as it suggests that romantic bonds are evolutionarily designed to fade once their reproductive and child-rearing purposes are fulfilled”

  3. Executive orders signed today by AP News: I’m someone who would rather read about the terrible things happening in our government, than watch it on television; AP is a good source! A rundown of the heinous executive orders signed today, including pulling out of the Paris Treaty Agreement and World Health Organization, reversing several immigration orders, rolling back trans protections, ending DEI programs in the federal government and declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border.

EATING

  1. Kala Modern Greek: I went here during my senior year fall break and I remembered it as being the most delicious, satisfying meal. I told Micky it was the only thing that I had to do while in Chicago, and she didn’t object! Kala once again didn’t disappoint, and I highly recommend it to anyone living or visiting Chicago.

PLAYING

  1. five seconds flat by Lizzy McAlpine: If I had known her vibe was deeply avoidant attachment, I would have started listening to her music years ago. I still remember the song that she never put out from TikTok “You ruined the 1975” and it’s a tragedy it was never formally released, but those who know it understand the chokehold it had on the app for a short while. My current favorite song is Reckless Driving, and I’m interested to see how she evolves in her sophomore album Older which I’m yet to listen to.

  2. Triangle of Sadness director breaks down the dinner scene: Is it crazy to say that Triangle of Sadness is one of my comfort movies? I loved watching the director break down the bill scene because it’s so pivotal in the movie, and so perfectly uncomfortable and complex. This is the first time I saw Harris Dickinson in anything, and as we all know, I’ve been a big fan since.

  3. We Live in Time: I watched this on the way to Chicago and the guy in the window seat next to me was simultaneously watching, only a few minutes ahead of me. In my peripheral view, I could see him cry or lean forward anxiously and it was kind of nice to have a little warning for when an upcoming scene was about to get deeply emotional. The film is heartbreaking, and so well acted. We all know my strong affection for Andrew Garfield, and I’ve always liked Florence Pugh as an actress and personality, but she really won me over in this movie. I couldn’t stop thinking about how beautiful her eyes were! The makeup team made the right call to do a thicker black wing eyeliner, because it complemented her eye shape so well.

OBSESSING

  1. My architecture & interior design board on Pinterest: I don’t know why, but I’ve been really loving adding to this board lately! I think the way color and shape are used in architecture and interior design have been inspiring me in my fashion. It’s always exciting to find fashion inspiration in non-traditional places.

RECOMMENDING

  1. Red Moon in Venus by Kali Uchis: I listened to this album all the way through for the first time in a few months, and I forgot just how good every single song is. I have a draft top 10 favorite albums of all time, and this Kali album is in there for a reason. It’s sexy and smooth and the features are so complementary to Kali’s voice and sound.

TREATING

  1. Gold ring from Etsy: I’ve been really into necklaces and bracelets these past few months, but I want to start slowly rebuilding my ring collection with quality pieces. I’m excited for this chunky, square ring and I think it will be a good anchor piece that I can build off of to create a really solid ring stack.
