I keep thinking about Candace Owen’s quote (terrifying way to start a sentence, I know) from some video that circulated a while back on TikTok which goes “It’s all a little fake and gay”. I find the quote deeply unserious and hysterical- holding space for that this Thursday.
In this Thought Dump Thursday, you will find:
A) An entry from my favorite cafe
B) I’m expanding my vocabulary this new year
C) Shecago for the weekend
A) An entry from my favorite cafe (1.11)
It’s 54 degrees in Houston today and beautifully sunny, which alleviates the slight sting of the winds if you’re sitting in the path of sunlight. There’s a pair sitting outside of Blacksmith, the cafe from which I'm writing this, and we are sharing a window. Them on the outside, and me inside grasping onto the warmth of the AC. The woman is eating a green salad of sorts, and the guy has a coffee while he plays with a small black dog who moves from his lap to the table and back to his lap. They’ll leisurely chat, occasionally she’ll type on her laptop, and then they’ll return to conversation. I’ve been thinking a lot about the word sonder, defined below.
: the feeling of realizing that everyone has a life as complex and vivid as your own
The pair outside, I’m going to make the assumption that they’re together, seem really in tune with each other. Something about their dynamic is really comforting and I wanted to interview them. Get to learn more about their story, and of course, meet and potentially hold the dog. Some may call it nosy; I call it acting on sonder.
B) Expanding my vocab, thanks Merriam Webster
I’ve decided to start checking Merriam Webster’s word of the day in order to expand on my vocabulary! I get into weird reading lulls where I barely pick up my book, but when I finally do, I read for hours on end. However, I’m constantly on my laptop so this will be another good way to strengthen my vocab despite my lack of consistent reading, a goal I’m working on. My favorite word since I’ve started doing this is hackneyed which means something considered uninteresting or unfunny because it’s used too often; neither fresh nor original. Using hackneyed in a sentence: “Sometimes Love Island can be a bore to get through because of the hackneyed dialogue from both contestants and the announcer”
C) It’s Shecago, at least for the weekend
In a last-minute whirlwind decision, I’m randomly going to Chicago this weekend to attempt to secure a first-round interview through a networking event that’s happening. I have a couple qualms about it, but for now, I’m going to refrain from shooting myself in the foot. I am, however, excited to see some school friends and get out of Houston for a couple days, even if Sunday’s forecast is claiming a high of a whopping 12 degrees.
