Weekly REPORT 4/1
Merry April Fool’s Day! Do little kids still pull pranks on this day, is that a thing? I assume they’re just like playing on their iPads somewhere, I don’t know. I’ve been a little grumpy the last week, on account of my continued nose congestion and frustration on trying to finish my portfolio. It’s a rocky balance of trying to present my information in a fun engaging way but not fall too deep into my perfectionism that can be debilitating when it comes to creative projects and often turns short term projects into long term ones unnecessarily.
I’ll be in St. Louis for the weekend for alumni reunion which is a terrifying reminder that it’s almost been a year since I graduated college. Going to postpone my panic about that until next week. Right now, I’ll focus on the reunion aspect and seeing my friends who I’ve infinitely missed. There also won’t be another report until 4/14 on account of my being out of town. Okay, that’s all, happy reading!
READING
New Yorker article about Gavin Newsom’s podcast: I didn’t know that Gavin Newsom had a podcast, but this was an entertaining summary on the nonsense occurring on Newsom’s podcast in the form of an informative, yet sarcastically comedic article- my favorite! Takeaway is that the podcast is essentially just the classic “Democrats bending the knee to far-right pundits”, what’s new? I don’t know much about Newsom since he’s not my governor, but the more I learn, the more I’m confused by his alleged appeal.
“What Newsom and the disavowers out there should remember is that there are still a lot of liberals in America, and that pandering to an aggrieved, mostly imagined group of voters—the sort of people who would supposedly want to vote for a liberal Steve Bannon in linen pants—is not only silly from an electoral standpoint but humiliating on a personal level.”An overview of Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe: Beautifully written piece about Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe in the context of the intersection between art and fashion. I’m still mourning the end of this era, and in the process, have dove headfirst into all interviews with Jonathan talking about his vision for the Spanish brand. As the writer takes us through their (he and Jonathan’s) amble through the Prado in Madrid, he discusses Jonathan’s work at both Loewe and JW Anderson, the milestones and his overall ethos when it comes to design. I also found it interesting that he went back on a quote he made years ago previously saying “Fashion cannot be elite. In the modern world, it isn’t possible. If luxury is a form of elitism, I don’t want to be part of it”, and now saying “Yes, luxury is élitist, and, yes, luxury is at arm’s length…”
“I would love to be known as a great painter. You can focus yourself on doing twelve masterpieces, and that will define your career. Fashion is a little harder than that. It’s a continual act.”
“You have to be at one with the idea that you are replaceable, and that is good. The great thing about fashion is that we all go out of fashion.”
EATING
Coconut blueberry cake from Angela’s Oven: Not much to say about the cake other than that it was delicious! I went to this bakery on Wednesday, which simultaneously coincided with all the elementary school kids at this Spanish immersion school and/or local kids soccer team getting out of practice. Everyone was getting the wood-fire pizzas, which I believe are only sold on Wednesdays, but I could be wrong. It was cute to see all these different families, and I honestly should return on a Wednesday because, if I’m understand the signage correctly, there’s unlimited wine and beer with the purchase of a pizza.
PLAYING
The Line on Hulu: This movie made me so indescribably furious and deeply heartbroken at the same time. It follows a sophomore named Tom, played by Alex Wolff, who goes to college at a Southern school and is deeply involved in his frat KNA. The story revolves around the sinister nature of fraternities, the transactional nature of the “friendships” found in them and highlights just how much wealthy white men get away with in this country. A cautionary tale that, while not based on any particular story, unfortunately echoes the devastating realities of many young men’s fates over the past few decades.
Amelia Dimoldenberg on Las Culturistas: This was filmed the morning after the SNL 50th party, which lent itself to some very entertaining stories and just funny hungover moments. It was especially funny to see hungover Amelia so mellow, because on her show she’s nothing but energetic. First episode I’ve watched of this podcast, and it definitely won’t be my last! I love the bits Bowen and Matt play into, and the “I don’t think so honey” segment is too good.
Madeline Cline on Therapuss: Madeline seems like such a sweet and warm person. Jake did a great show of getting her to share more about her background and how she got into acting, while balancing it with their opinions on random topics.
Billie and Quenlin for Complex’s Goat Talk: I love the editing on this because it just emphasizes how chaotic Billie and Quen are as a duo. I adore whenever celebrities are friends and have so many inside jokes that let you glimpse into the reality of their friendship. I just love giggly girls, because same!
OBSESSING
Disclaimer: The formatting is being super annoying so all of the images are not next to their respective titles. First set of images are Urte Kat, second set of images are Uniform Person.
Loewe firefighter clasp denim jacket: A dream. An expensive, beautifully crafted dream.
Urte Kat: As always, shoutout to Susie’s spring haul for putting me onto this brand. Loving a black and white stripes in theory but have yet to find pieces in the pattern that truly speak to me until now! Also loving this spiral mini skirt.
Elevated basics from Uniform Person: Both of these tops are in colors I’m loving right now, and I just think they could look cool with so many pieces I already own. Unfortunately, they’re currently sold out, but I’m plotting- trust.
RECOMMENDING
Understitch’s video on Phoebe Philo: I’ve heard Phoebe’s name in the industry for years and years now, but I’ve never done my due diligence to understand her impact until now. This view was great to understand why there was so much hype around her self-named label, and how her time at Chloe and Celine cultivated a fan base that allowed for her to step out on her own. Love this channel for fashion history, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know more about designers and brands!
TREATING
Black mesh top from Anthropologie: My second ever purchase from Anthro everybody. Unfortunately, the blog formatting is currently being weird so I can’t include a picture, but I’m sure I’ll be wearing it on my socials soon. I tried it on in white and desperately wanted to like it more because I buy so much black, but once I tried on the black version, I just knew my fate was sealed. My noble hunt for an elevated white blouse continues!
