Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T 9/2
Happy September! I am in need of a doctor’s visit and some strong meds to fight off whatever virus I’ve caught- we’re off to a bit of a rocky start. However, September is usually a high energy month so I’m looking forward to whatever it holds. Before we get into the good stuff, some random thoughts I’ve been collecting.
I miss St. Louis a lot. I can’t believe as of right now, I’ll be spending fall in a city with no colorful leaves… pain and suffering indeed
Why are so many white people wearing cornrows at the US Open?? I’m not even offended, just more so concerned for their hairlines because some of them are holding on for dear life
What are people’s thoughts on the Stairmaster? As someone who doesn’t love the treadmill, should I switch some of my weekly cardio to the steps of hell?
All of the sudden Christina Aguilera is everywhere and she’s serving uncanny valley on this “comeback” tour of hers. Not an actual tour, she’s just in every publication. Sure, she looks younger, but her eyes show her age, and it all just feels a little spooky
Seeing Jesse Rutherford perform Sweater Weather, Reflections and Softcore at Reading Festival in the UK had me so emotional at 3am last week watching the videos on Tiktok. The Neighbourhood comeback tour would be my Oasis reunion tour
Speaking of Oasis, as someone who has casually heard a few songs, learning about the lore between the Gallagher brothers has been an entertaining part of this past week
READING
Sportswear brands and gaining Gen Z’s loyalty: Discusses how our generation wants to invest in quality, name brands in athleisure. However, even with brand loyalty to larger, established brands, there’s still a lot of room for newer brands to solidify their presence and loyal fanbase. Examples included were Vuori, On and Hoka, all three of which I would say have a strong foothold within our generation.
Beabadoobee for Interview: I feel very conflicted about the styling for this shoot. The outfits just don’t feel cohesive to me individually and across the shoot, there’s no thematic idea. It doesn’t make sense for Bea and generally just doesn’t make sense at all. Random aside- I love that she’s a trinket collector like me.
Ben Shelton for Interview: Ben “not understanding” Challengers is honestly heartbreaking to hear because what do you mean by that? It’s nice that the tennis technique gets a co-sign from him though.
Mike Faist for Esquire: Mike Faist, my humble king. A short but endearing interview that I wished had more photos! Unrelated, but I think he would have a great voice for audiobooks.
EATING
Sichuan Express: I was craving rice and chicken but not Nigerian rice and chicken, so I decided to get Chinese food! Classic Americanized Chinese style setup in terms of picking your base, proteins, and extra goodies. This was really filling and actually split into two meals because there was so much food. I got fried rice, beef broccoli, orange chicken and one chicken egg roll- a very classic order I think. The beef broccoli wasn’t the greatest, but the orange chicken and fried rice were nostalgically delish. I think the egg roll fell flat, mostly because it was pretty dry inside. However, for $14 including tip, not bad at all.
PLAYING
Industry (slight spoilers included): I think the reason Industry gets Succession comparisons is because as a viewer, you can’t feel anything towards the characters except deep pity, bone-chilling annoyance, and near-hatred. It’s major loser central. However, while there’s a clear hierarchy being challenged in Succession, Industry showcases an environment that feels a little more level, despite what Eric and Bill Adler want you to believe. There’s also way more graphic sex scenes in Industry. The only person I liked in season 2 was Rob. I miss Greg from the first season but honestly proud of him for putting out his book, as shitty as it may possibly be. Every scene in season 2 was Harper or Yasmin or the firm taking another L. Rob’s poor decision making was only stomached because he has a precious little face and is genuinely trying to be a better person. Does he take some major steps backward towards the end of season 2 and in season 3? Well, yes! And we love him for it anyways. Harper, and I would also say Yasmin, are well written anti-heroes that make me want to scream and pull my hair out and squirm from secondhand embarrassment. Season 1 I breezed through because it was a new show, and I was waiting for the meat of the characters to be even partially realized. While the first season set up the foundation for the environment of Pierpoint and cutthroat nature of the industry, the second season provided the much-needed character backstory and development that I was aching for. I’m now fully caught up to season 3. I never watched Game of Thrones, but like many others I’m sure, I appreciated the Kit Harrington cameo. I read the Vulture recaps after every episode, like I did Succession, so that’s how you know I’m in deep. All in all, I am hooked and I’m glad the show is something for me to look forward to every Sunday night. Sunday’s Rishi focused episode was just as unhinged and stressful as I thought it was going to be- fantastic television. I’m hoping that in exchange for Venetia leaving, we’ll get a Gus or Daria comeback. Be expecting a heavy Industry themed ‘reading’ section in next week’s report.
Dominic Fike’s Bonnaroo set: I love the bleached hair on him. It’s just fun to watch him experiment live and have fun with his songs. I’m so happy I saw him last summer. 14 minutes is a great little album, but Sunburn is still on repeat.
Tyler the Creator interview: I’ve missed Tyler doing interviews. Few words to say but love him and I aspire to feel as confident about myself and my success the way he is about his.
OBSESSING
Striped bedding: As crisp as it is, I think I’m over my white bedding and possibly ready to take the leap into something a little more playful. These striped bedding sets feel very adult but still fun and colorful. My room is painted light blue and white so if I were able to find something red like in the third photo, that would be a fun contrast to play around with.
@mikapariika on Tiktok: She’s a Gen-Z Texas teacher who has the cutest outfits! Using this as inspiration next time I go thrifting.
RECOMMENDING
Zack Fox set for Black House Radio: I’ve been sleeping on Zack Fox, but after this summer, I’m now wide awake. I still need to listen to his Boiler Room from New York but holy wow, this Black House Radio set is so good. Also, the setup of this set just feels so familiar and welcoming. He’s quickly risen to be one of my favorite DJs.
TREATING
New white t-shirt: Every year-ish, I buy a new white baby-tee once the pit stains get too treacherous on my old one. My previous white shirt was from Uniqlo, but the one I just purchased is from Target, surprisingly. I like it because it’s a little loose fitting on the bottom and the perfect length. I might go back and get the same style in black.
Sleep: It’s all I’ve been doing for the past four days in an attempt to make whatever illness I have disappear. It’s not really working, but I’m sure my body is grateful anyways.
