Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T 9/17

I’m going to Austin this weekend! I’m going to spend two days just thrifting and going to markets, and then seeing Omar Apollo on Saturday. Other than that, nothing to preface for this report. Bonne lecture!

READING

  1. Are young men becoming more sexist: This was a more qualitative explanation of how young men are holding more resentment towards women, with caveats about non-random studies, general limitations etc. They talked about the topic in terms of three main categories: education/job prospects, home ownership and romantic relationships. Also explored how women getting more progressive might inflate the level at which we feel/experience men becoming more conservative, the lack of empathy being cultivated etc. There’s discussion about expectations of status amongst men, of course founded on the patriarchy. I don’t know- an interesting article to get you thinking. Would be interested to see later studies that come out with more quantitative data as well to back up the wider general research that has been happening. Introduces the ideas of cultural entrepreneurs and how they’ve utilized social media to gain mass influences that are negatively influencing young men.

  2. What qualifies “adulthood”: All I’m thinking about from this article is the quote within it that says “Between the ages of 22 and 25, you will be miserable. Sorry. If you’re like most people, you will flail.” Interesting read exploring the timeline of “adulthood” in its impossibility to pin down and includes excerpts from people who submitted their thoughts. Long, but enjoyable.

  3. FLO (the girl group, not the period tracker app): I didn’t know that Renee was 21, omg. The fact that she would’ve just graduated college like me is crazy to think about. It was cool to learn more about the group and hear them discuss the bumps in the road they’ve experienced. I need to listen to their new album. I really love the photography where they look like they’re on a talk show set. The concept is fun, and the styling is pretty solid with the exception of the trio sitting on the stairs- I think the double belt action and similar dress necklines are motifs that weren’t successful.

EATING

  1. Peaches: They’re just so, so good and I’m sad the season is coming to an end. I saw a TikTok recipe for caramelized peaches in butter and brown sugar that I need to try, but for now I’ve been enjoying them in their natural state.

PLAYING

  1. Peter McPoland road trip vlog: What you would expect of a solo, cross country road trip vlog. The occasional babble here, some background music there. Enjoyable.

  2. Three different Upstairs Neighbors episodes (22, 25 & 27): This podcast saved my sanity when I was on hour seven of doing my hair last Wednesday and I was fighting a panic attack because my hair was shedding in chunks.

  3. The Perfect Couple on Netflix: There are some really funny bits and somehow, I managed to get through the limited series even though Nicole Kidman was in it. Also, it introduced me to a lot of new actors which is always fun and got to see more of Meghann Fahy who I love. I found out the lead actress Eve Hewson is Bono and Ali Hewson’s daughter. Her brother Eli is the lead singer of Inhaler which is one of my favorite bands and, fun fact, Eli and I have the same birthday. Tangential to that, I found out Eli is dating Christy Turlington’s daughter? I don’t know why it hurt me that a nepo baby was in a relationship with another nepo baby, but I think it broke the illusion that he would randomly meet me and fall in love with me. Happy for Gracie, I guess. This got so off topic, but lastly, I just wanted to mention that there should have been more of Shooter, my Bollywood king,

OBSESSING

  1. Blue eye makeup: On the rare occasion I decide to play around with eyeshadow, I usually stick to purple in my lower lash line or green in my inner corner because apparently those colors really bring out brown eyes. However, I’ve been seeing some very playful blue eyeshadow looks that I really love and don’t look too complex to recreate. Whether or not I’ll like them on myself is a whole other story.

  2. Selvedge denim jeans: I think this is what they’re called but I’m not exactly sure. I saw this picture of Dutch influencer I follow post this picture and went on a denim deep dive. Unfortunately, it’s not pants season for me yet but when it hits 70s best believe… I’m ready.

RECOMMENDING

  1. Watching the Detectives: Cillian Murphy, you will always be famous to me. He is so adorable and strange and nerdy in this movie. Lucy Liu plays well opposite him and embodies Violet’s playful, chaotic spirit really well. It’s a rom-com by way of nerdy guy and manic-pixie dream girl and I’m like 99% sure some aspect of this movie inspired Scott Pilgrim. Really, thoroughly enjoyed and if I was a movie buff enough to have comfort favorites, I’m sure this would be one of them- I was giggling the whole way through.

  2. “Alligator Bites Never Heal” by Doechii: An absolute masterpiece and in this absolutely killer music year, this is one of the best albums released in 2024. Please give it a listen.

TREATING

  1. Whole Foods pastries: My mom got my sister a tiramisu cake for her birthday at Whole Foods and ending up coming away with some other little treats as well. My favorite was the classic cheesecake but the chocolate one surprised me with how much I liked it! Also, the Berry Chantilly cupcake doesn’t compare to the cake- in case anyone was wondering.
