NYFW SS25 Review

I don’t usually pay a ton of attention to NYFW because Milan and Paris are enough to keep up with as it is. However, I’ve taken note of the few collections this season that have stirred something in me and I’m here to share what I loved! Images from Vogue as per uzh.

Prabal Gurung: I honestly wasn’t expecting to like this collection as much as I do. The giant sequins are fun, and emulate polka dots instead of shimmering sequins, which have also been a growing trend. I’m not super in love with the trailing fabric on some of the looks, although I know it’s a motif in the collection, but I really enjoy the simpler silhouettes and overall appreciate the fabric choices made.

Willy Chavarria: I want a movie made around this collection. For some reason, I just know that this would read so well in a film. I’m relatively new to Willy Chavarria as a designer, but I need to tap in because this collection was delightful. Proportions and silhouettes are played with so beautifully and you can clearly see the inspirations from the everyday workman’s uniforms- janitors, teachers, construction workers etc. Chavarria said he took inspiration from the United Farm Workers Movements and the climate of the upcoming presidential election. You can also see Chavarria’s Mexican American heritage shine through in not only the collection, but the styling of the models. The back half of the collection showcased the looks in collaboration with Adidas which still had the Willy flare. Excited to see the future of this brand.

Alaia: Just a really beautiful, clean collection that played with lines well. The long, puffed skirts were a standout to me as well as the Courreges-looking, white illusion dress. The earrings flowing into the necklace as a motif felt both clever and elegant. The first few bandeau looks I think will be a huge hit. I also really enjoy the color palette for this collection.

Norma Kamali: There are references to many different eras of fashion, but they’re integrated into a cohesive vision. Amongst many other influences, I see 20s flapper, 70s power suits and what’s reading to me as a flamenco or Spanish style influence in some of the gowns? The pastel pink floral print I actually despise (didn’t include any outfits of that print for a reason) and 81 looks for a collection is a little overwhelming- I think some could have been cut. Overall, though, I appreciate this collection.
