Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T 10/1
Guys, I’ve been really bad about eating vegetables lately and I’m having to gentle parent myself into working them back into my meals. I’m also working through a little sickness, which isn’t fun. On to more important things- the Industry finale. I don’t know if it was the tequila cocktail I made myself mixed in with the Ben and Jerry’s half-baked ice cream I ate mixed in with the chili oil I used for my dinner potstickers, or the perfect cinema that was the Industry season 3 finale episode, but I teared up four different times and my stomach was unsettled throughout. I love this show so much and I’ll be insatiable trying to find media that will fill my tv appetite until season 4 returns.
READING
What happened to the politically conscious black athlete: The article doesn’t touch on anything I haven’t already noticed myself, but it definitely reminded me of the lack of Black male athletes sharing their political opinions in this presidential election versus the last one. It could be sexism, it could be ignorance, or it could be that men feel there’s less at stake for them this time around (compared to female athletes that have been more outspoken about their opinions of Harris and Trump). It’s likely a combination of all.
Lagos rave scene: I’m a simple girl. I see anything about Nigeria in pop culture (I’m 100% Nigerian), I click! It makes me so happy to know that within rave culture in Lagos, there are safe spaces such as Group Therapy where people can be free to have a night out without discrimination. Afrobeats is the heart of the city, but it’s exciting to know that house music is slowly, but surely, spreading its wings.
Sam Nivola for The Face: I thought he was adorable in The Perfect Couple and was shocked to learn he’s just a year younger than me. He has such a baby face and it’s rare that actors actually look like the high school age they’re meant to embody in a show. Classically, he’s a nepo baby but I’m excited to see him in The White Lotus.
Savannah Hudson for The Face: She has such a cute personality. I’ve been a fan of between friends since early high school and it’s been insane to watch them grow. I loved their EP we just need some time together so much that summer before my freshman year of college, I painted the album cover on a canvas. I never finished the painting, but my love for them remains.
EATING
Banh mi from Roostar: I follow a few Houston food influencers on Tiktok, so this place came at the recommendation of other Houstonians. The bread was partially hollowed out, soft and fluffy. The pork was well seasoned and the cucumbers, carrots etc. complimented it perfectly. I wish the jalapeño had been cut into smaller pieces, and there was a greasy spread similar to lard or like pork fat (?) on the bottom of the bread that looks-wise scared me, but taste-wise was perfectly fine. I often don’t find a banh mi filling, and this was more so than previous- 7/10!
PLAYING
Evan Mock for SKATE TALES: I like him with his hair grown out! I know people absolutely shit on the Gossip Girl remake, but I went into it knowing it would be different from the original, so while I thought the writing at times was banal and inconsistent, it was kind of the perfect mindless watch. Evan definitely isn’t the most gifted actor I’ve ever seen but who knows what the future holds.
Tell Me Lies on Hulu: Like Industry, this is one of those shows where everyone sucks so bad that each episode is painful to get through, but like a train wreck you can’t look away. I started watching it because I realized that it was set in college, which I feel like shows rarely are, so I wanted to support the show and see what the hype was about. The relationships, romantic and platonic, are all depressingly toxic and each episode leaves me grateful I avoided serious relationships with mediocre and evil men in college. Thomas Doherty and Tom Ellis were delicious additions to seasons 2 and I’m very intrigued to see how the season wraps up because the past few episodes have been a little dull. The only people I’m rooting for right now are Pippa and Wrigley- individually, not as a couple.
OBSESSING
Desigual: Susielola (on YouTube) mentioned this brand in a recent vlog of hers, because she had found some of their pieces at a flea market in Italy I believe. It’s a Spanish brand that does a ton of cool graphic, mesh prints. They also play around with different design elements in a fun way. These are some of my favorite pieces!
RECOMMENDING
Chappell Roan for The Face: I love that Chappell does drag for her stage persona because then it translates into more exciting editorials because stylists know she is willing to push the limit artistically. The styling for this is super fun and gothic and her drawn on black eyebrows in the outfit with the red jacket remind me of the Luar show (although, there’s definitely an older reference there that I’m missing). This interview is classic Chappell- candid, refreshing, witty and firm when necessary. I feel like this is the most consolidated interview I’ve learned about her personality, the way she’s handling everything, her being reached out to by fellow pop icons to check in on her and everything in between. She gets very vulnerable at the end and this interview is just another lovely reminder about celebs- they’re just like us! But in a very real and honest way.
Grab your passport, I mean headphones playlist on Spotify: Fantastic background music playlist and 99% of it isn't in English which is always fun. I was dancing in my seat and simultaneously locked in to what I was doing which is a rare but energizing combination.
TREATING
Iced americanos: I’m back on my iced americano grind and I’ve been trying a lot of new cafes in Houston. A new favorite is Tenfold Coffee in the Heights. It’s the little things!
