TDT 2/13

I’ve had a lovely little Thursday downtown. Tomorrow is Valentine’s! I have no thoughts about anything love related, platonic, romantic or otherwise. Honestly, I don’t think deeply about love, specifically romantic love, very often. I did, however, schedule a nail appointment for tomorrow and I plan to go get ice cream or take cute photos at a photobooth downtown somewhere. A cute little self-love afternoon!

In this Thought Dump Thursday, you will find:

A) Society is designed to make us want to settle. Should we just give in?

B) i-D Magazine articles

C) NYFW 25

A) Society is designed to make us want to settle. Should we just give in? Do big dreams have any place in a late-stage capitalistic society about to collapse?

In a world where sheer survival is having to take priority over happiness, it’s more and more tempting to just accept whatever crumbs you’re given instead of striving for what you really want (in relationships, in jobs, in milestones etc.). When it seems like everything could crash down in the next second, should you keep working towards a dream? Or rather, take the more practical, realistic avenues that set you up for a future of stability rather than one of excitement. Are they mutually exclusive? As someone who values consistency and stability, should I have chosen that route? Obviously, it’s too late to go back in time but moving forward, should I leave my wild dreams for my future to the wayside? As an enthusiastic dreamer who has been imbued with realist tendencies in my upbringing, it’s a tough line to balance.

B) i-D Magazine articles

At the top of every week, I go through a list of about 10-15 digital publications to see what’s what in fashion, politics, food, psychology etc. This has always been done for fun, but of course now that I have this blog, this media deep dive is done in preparation for my weekly reports. In this glorious list of magazines, I’ve somehow omitted i-D, a publication which I deeply love and would kill to work for. Don’t ask me how I made such a grave mistake, but I’m rectifying it now by highlighting some of their articles I read this week!

Street interviews of Parisians: I love any street interview fashion series and people’s responses for who’d they want to sway lives with for a day were so interesting. The person saying they’d want to switch lives with Macron and jump out of a window made me giggle. I’ve been missing Paris a lot recently, so this made me smile.

Altadena teenagers starting organizations to support Eaton fire impacted teens: A very inspiring and sweet story about teenagers in Altadena who have started organizations to help restore the confidence of children in the community who have lost their homes and belongings. Many of these organizers are 14 and 15 years old and it’s astonishing to see them mobilize at such a young age.

Street interviews of skateboarders in Nigeria: Nigeria and skating? Of course, I had to read.

C) NYFW FW25

On one end of the spectrum, I felt I saw a lot of brocade style prints, heavy embroidery, detailed and even over-the-top embellishments. On the other end of the spectrum, there was an emphasis on 90s minimalism but with a more oversized approach to silhouette, which is very interesting because I felt like the overall consensus of SS25 collections were leaning away from oversized silhouettes. Winners for me were Coach, Tanner Fletcher and Jade Wade.

Coach: I’m having a moment with cropped jackets in motor style of 1940s men’s bomber styles- can’t get enough of them. I love how these have pockets that are super high, and the models look a bit awkward having their elbows so high. I love the light wash, low rise, flared jeans and the really long belts. I’m very intrigued by the little pocket necklace things. The styling is also really interesting, with hair purposely tucked into the large jacket collars, the kind of cheugy name necklaces in cursive writing, the colorful kidlike glasses- it’s all a little weird and kind of perfect.

Tanner Fletcher: This is a perfect color scheme to me. The light blues, deep reds, cool-toned beiges are all some of my favorite colors to wear right now. I’ve heard of Tanner Fletcher before, but I haven’t made it a point to check out their collections. They have a new admirer in me! The collection was inspired by the 1930s and 40s (I think 40s fashion is making a comeback) and I’m just obsessed with how classy it looks.

Jane Wade: This is so good to me. I love how they all look like more sleek or futuristic takes on some sort of uniform. The first look is janitorial to me, and the last three are office related. I think these are really wearable and will do well commercially, but they’re also unique and play around with current trends including excess buttons, asymmetry, cropped jackets etc.

Jonathan Simkhai: I really like embellishments on the top in the first look and the overall silhouette. Also, the leather gloves- so chic! I’m a fan of the leather-on-leather action happening in the third. I hate to say that Miu Miu has a monopoly on the second look’s silhouette, but come on… we all know we’re thinking Miu Miu when we see it
