Weekly REPORT 3/17

The F1 season has started! Unfortunately, I have to add the F1 channel to my ever-growing list of monthly subscriptions, but this season will be too interesting to miss out on.

I tried to consistently post on Tiktok for a few days, and it, on top of nine million other things including a distressing doctor’s appointment, caused me so much anxiety. I’m just not a short content kind of girl. I was born and raised on YouTube in the era of true longform content, so the idea of hunching over for hours on end to edit short form content doesn’t click in my brain. It’d be great to build a following there, because I think it’s a bit easier than IG and YT, but I hate spending a lot of time on TikTok. It’s hard to build anything when I get anxious spending too much time on the platform, whereas I can spend endless time on YouTube and Pinterest and not go crazy.

I don’t think many people are willing to admit this, which is insane because it's glaringly obvious for our generation, but a lot of people are chasing some level of fame. Whether it be in your office job, social media, or even in a non-profit sector, it’s nature to want people to care about what you have to say. Taking it a step further, a lot of people want to be publicly recognized for their opinions in a certain field, especially when so many people have been able to build careers off perceived taste and opinions alone. I’m in this group of people chasing what I like to call, and what many others have also deemed, a “Devon Lee Carlson” level of fame. Famous to the people who get it within your niche, while still being able to run your business and not get mobbed in the streets.

READING

  1. How universities are dealing with the president’s attack on DEIA: I think this quote below perfectly sums up the observations about universities stated in this article.

“Most universities are not interested in getting into legal squabbles with the Department of Education,” Black said. “It’s like, do they like diversity? Yes. Do they like it more than not being investigated? No.”

  2. Mahmoud Khalil’s detention: A succinct read discussing the kidnapping and ICE detention of Mahmoud Khalil and what it signifies for the future of free speech in America under Tr*mp.

“Trump’s assault on basic First Amendment principles may begin with Khalil, but it will not end with him.”

  3. Clairo for The Face: Clairo, my sweet! Have passively been a fan of her, but her album Charm has really stuck with me since its release. It was lovely to learn more about her! She went to Syracuse, dropped out after a year and produced her second album Sling with Jack Antonoff (and Lorde is on some of the backing vocals).

“It’s interesting to constantly be faced with the 19-year-old version of yourself” is a very fair point in reference to singing old songs, and definitely something that we as fans don’t realize when we crave for artists to play their older songs.”

  4. John Summit for Billboard: Hard not to like him honestly, and though I’ve heard horror stories about the crowds he now attracts, I think objectively he’s very talented. I need him and Dom (Dolla) to continue doing joint shows until I can attend one of them.

EATING

  1. Blueberry scone and almond croissant from Angela’s Oven: I finally tried one of the Houston bakeries that has been on my list! The blueberry lemon scone was delicious, soft on the inside, and a perfectly tart. Almond croissants are not my favorite, I got it for my mom, but I tried a little bite of hers and it was pretty good! There wasn’t too much almond extract used, which is always the element that I find overpowering.

PLAYING

  1. Ross Lynch on Therapuss: Ross listens to The Streets!!! Love that, shoutout to his new girlfriend for introducing him. I wish I liked The Driver Era’s recent releases more, but it doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the interview. I think Ross is very aware of how he comes across in the media or online. It felt like there were points where he was presenting himself as a little overly intellectual or overly zen, and it didn’t fully feel authentic. However, it was really funny to watch Ross realize how addicted Jake is to his phone and attempt to impart the beauty of nature on Jake. The number of times Jake says “...what?” with a shocked and slightly disturbed face- it’s hilarious every time.

  2. Finneas performing “2001” on Jimmy Kimmel: I love the lower harmony on the choruses. I’m so sad I couldn’t see him on tour for this but also, he refuses to tour in Texas so… Alas, what am I meant to do?

  3. Secondhandhun’s Paris vlog: A very enjoyable vlog in Paris! This girl is a columnist for Vogue Scandinavia and moved to Paris for a couple months. Just reminded me of all the things I love about the city, and the life I’m looking forward to living in my future.

OBSESSING

  1. “I Fell in Love Again” by Kid Bloom: This song is addictive. I loved “Cowboy” by Kid Bloom, so I wanted to check out the album it came from! Happy I did, I think this song is going to be on repeat all of spring and summer.

RECOMMENDING

  1. Amelia Dimoldenberg for The New Yorker: I love Amelia and the Chicken Shop World she’s created. This article was great to hear about her dating show very earnestly, and the way she’s approached the show has changed since its inception 10 years ago. I think the most interesting bits are the segments about how she edits her episodes, how she decides what to cut and what to keep, and the bits about her upbringing. I’m excited to continue to watch her build her media empire. Also, I didn’t know she went to CSM! That school has pumped out nothing but icons, I’ll tell you that.

TREATING

Iced matcha and biscuit from Blacksmith

  1. Iced matchas: This truly is a treat because why are matchas are so expensive… especially compared to iced americanos which is my usual go to order, unless I want to splurge on a nitro cold brew. I’m still trying to figure out which of my favorite cafes makes the best iced matcha. So far, Tenfold is winning, but Un Caffe is not far behind.
