Florals for spring? Groundbreaking: Spring 2025 trend report
My ear has been to the streets (fashion week and true fashion commentators) for the past five weeks. Combined with my own personal thoughts and musings, I’m here to present some trends for spring that we’re likely to see that don’t include florals, because duh! If you agree, disagree, or have new thoughts, feel free to comment below!
I don’t include images in this post but reference my fashion week reviews for visuals
Trends to look out for
Military inspiration (revenge of the 2014 army green jacket): I mentioned this in my post talking more about the Burberry show, but it’s so terrifying and hilarious to see the 2014 army green jacket have its high fashion revival, in only a decade no less.
Indie sleaze is in full force: This comeback has been in the works for the past year, so this full throttle commitment to indie sleaze should come as no surprise. Wide leg pants are very out and skinnier, straighter pant silhouettes were all the rage this runway season. Tiny, simple, body-clinging tanks styled with multiple belts and ripped tights. There were a lot of tiny, structured shorts with skinny belts, kind of merging the office siren and indie sleaze trends together. Accessories in excess are also key to unlocking this aesthetic. More belts, zippers, grommets, zippers etc. Outfits that look like you’re waiting to hop on your partner’s motorcycle to head to their band’s show, and your wrists full of bangles and bag riddled with charms will clank down the street as you jet off.
70s shoulders: I don’t even mean just padded shoulders but full Maleficent style, sharp shoulders. I saw this mostly in suiting but also in just structured blouses as well. It’s one of those trends that I love when I see it on people, but doubt will work well on me- something for me to explore.
Big bags as clutches: The bigger, the better it is to play “handheld clutch”. Even if the bag has beautiful, sturdy handles available for your use- don’t bother.
Bohemian motifs: Reference Chloe, Zimmerman, and Isabel Marant as some of my favorite inspirations for the trend this season. Halter necklines, tons of fringe, and the most flowing, gorgeous skirts you’ve ever seen. Some of the lace choices I saw this season didn’t resonate for me, but if this is your style, I actually think shopping second hand will be the most ideal way to find pieces within this trend that are more unique and can better fit into one’s personal style. I’m eager to lean into this aesthetic more this fall so it feels more natural come springtime.
Sailor core: Not super prevalent (see Marni, Moschino and Prada for inspiration) but was fun to see brands get playful. I think this might be something that independent, small brands could actually take and run with since high-end brands didn’t necessarily corner the market on it this season.
Colors to look out for:
Butter yellow
Baby blues
Deep purples and reds
Tans and khakis of all undertones
According to WhoWhatWear, the roaring 20s are back? That might have to be something I do a little more digging into. Of course, trends are always prevalent, but it doesn’t mean you have to conform to them. However, one way to better exercise your personal style muscle is to recognize which trends you love, or hate, and why. The “why” is key to creating a closet full of pieces that you’re always excited to wear and helps deter you from purchasing items that are uncharacteristic.
